If you are involved in an indie-slanted record club, or you read Pitchfork, or you simply like really great rock 'n' roll songs, you will have been spinning Lost In The Dream, the second album from Philadelphia quartet The War On Drugs since it came out in April. Or maybe you've never heard of them. Either way, you're going to want to buy yourself an early Christmas present, because they're coming to Auckland for a show at the Powerstation on December 18.
They're the kind of band that have had reviewers using words like devastating, hair-raising and intoxicating, but the music isn't trendy or hipster. It's timeless - like the best of 70s rock, 80s anthems, blasted through a classic car stereo. We have no idea whether or not their lead songwriter Adam Granduciel (pictured) was introduced to the joys of Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits and Bob Seger growing up, but it sounds like he could've been - not in a homage/tribute/pastiche-type way, just that he knows how to write a great melody, some dry, wry, soulful lyrics, and create hands-in-the-air-moments of rock 'n' roll joy.
