The Voice: What we know about the show's most controversial audition ever

He's arguably the most controversial contestant who has ever auditioned for The Voice.

Viewers will tonight get to see 28-year-old Sam from Perth, whose audition not only prompts all four coaches to turn their chairs but also sees them begging for him to join their team (as you can see in the video above).

So what makes the Western Australian so controversial?

The Voice is all about impressing the coaches with your singing voice, but — without giving too much away — Sam has a few other tricks up his sleeve. Whether or not those tricks should be allowed in the competition is a question that causes fierce debate among the coaches, reports News.com.au.

"Some are going to think that it's not fair," Kelly Rowland told news.com.au.

Boy George added: "Sam is exciting but I feel his performance will divide the audience.

"He's a 'red sock in a white wash' for me. I thought he was a DJ but he's a 'loop artist' which is very new territory for The Voice."

Speaking to news.com.au ahead of tonight's episode, Delta Goodrem described Sam's audition as "out of the box fresh and cool", but agreed that what he did on stage would divide public opinion.

"Only time will tell. I think it will become more divisive as the audience will start to feel strongly toward individual artists," she said.

On tonight's episode, all four coaches desperately plead with Sam for him to pick them as his coach. It's a bidding war the likes of which we've never seen on the show.

"We all fought so hard," Goodrem told news.com.au.

When asked about Sam, Joe Jonas told us, "he's someone you do not want to go up against", and Kelly Rowland added that she was desperate to get him on her team.

"I wanted Sam on my team more than George!" she told news.com.au. "More than Delta! More than Joe! No one wanted this artist the way I did!"

News.com.au understands that one coach doesn't handle Sam's rejection very well, and quickly turns on the artist and suggests he shouldn't be in the competition.
