The Strokes' surprise return and why everyone is happy about it

Julian Casablancas and The Strokes have returned with their first new single in several years.

The Strokes have premiered their first new song in three years.

The American rock band unveiled their new track Oblivius on lead singer Julian Casablancas' new radio show Culture Void on America's Sirius XMU.

The group also announced a new EP, just days after revealing plans for a show at Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, next Tuesday.

The EP, called Future Present Past, will debut on June 3 and features new songs Drag Queen and Threat of Joy, as well as Oblivius and a second remix of the track.

The Strokes' debut record Is This It in 2001 was a critical and commercial hit and features on numerous best album lists.

After an extended break the band regrouped for a fifth album in 2013, Comedown Machine.

The band are due to play at New York's Governors Ball music festival later this summer before an appearance at Splendour in the Grass in Byron Bay, Australia.
