"The Simpsons" director/producer David Silverman told The Washington Post last month of the show's long run: "We don't want it to end."
Now, "The Simpsons" is scheduled to break the record for the longest-running prime-time scripted series in TV history.
Fox has renewed the show -- now in its 28th season -- for two more of them, meaning that the legendary animated series would break the Western drama "Gunsmoke's" record of 635 episodes in Season 30.
"Take that 'Gunsmoke!' You lost a race you didn't even know you were running!" Homer Simpson said Friday in a statement.
As a Fox series, "The Simpsons" debuted in 1989, launched by producers Matt Groening, James L. Brooks and the late Sam Simon.
