KEY POINTS:
The Rock radio station has toppled Newstalk ZB from its top spot, becoming the most listened to commercial radio station in the country.
While Newstalk ZB claimed the most number of listeners, with 422,100 different people tuning in each week, The Rock had a nationwide market share of 11.7 per cent, ahead of ZB on 11.3 per cent.
The results, released this afternoon by Research International, heralded good news for the RadioWorks network, which owns The Rock, The Edge and Radio Live.
The Edge came in second place behind Newstalk ZB for number of listeners, followed by The Rock.
RadioWorks group programme director Jana Rangooni was delighted with the results of the survey.
"To have the number one and number two music stations with the most listeners in the country for The Edge and The Rock is a brilliant result for the company, and a credit to the very hardworking teams on both networks", she said.
In Auckland, The Radio Network [TRN] stations continue to dominate the market, with Newstalk ZB and ZM claiming the most listeners, followed by independently owned Mai FM.
TRN director of programming and marketing David Brice said the network was pleased with the results.
"You always have ups and downs. When you've got eight brands in 13 markets everyone can't be a winner, but overall we're really happy," he said.
As a whole, more people are listening to the radio in Auckland, with the total number of listeners increasing 8.9 per cent, according to The Radio Bureau.
