"We're thinking about it, you know. And if we come up with something that we all feel is worthy of doing, we'll do it," Zaillian says.
"This was designed as a standalone piece. That being said, there are ways of ... taking what it feels like and what it's about and doing another season on another subject.
"So we're talking about it."
A separate story might scare some fans of the show who were burnt by True Detective - another HBO murder mystery that had an excellent first season, but mucked up the second.
HBO is yet to confirm a second series to The Night Of, which followed with intense detail the case of Nasir Khan, a college student accused of murdering a girl in a complicated case with multiple suspects.
Many of the show's cast, including John Turturro, Riz Ahmed, Michael K Williams and Bill Camp, have been praised for their strong performances.
"The wide-eyed Ahmed is perfect as the naive young man who can't seem to make a right decision. That is until he agrees to let Turturro's Jack Stone help him. And Turturro hits the right notes as the cynical attorney who has his work cut out for him," wrote The Lincoln Journal Star in a five-star review.
"As complicated and layered as life itself, The Night Of is an instant classic," said TV Guide.
As for that finale, Herald critic Karl Puschmann called it "a satisfying conclusion to what has to be considered one of the top series' of 2016 so far".
