The Handmaid's Tale finally has a New Zealand release date

It's topping must-see lists overseas, but The Handmaid's Tale is yet to be made available in New Zealand. Until now.

Lightbox has confirmed it will begin screening the acclaimed TV series from June 8.

The streaming service will have eight full episodes available from next Thursday, and promises the finale will land on June 15 - just hours after it screens in the US.

The show depicts a dystopian future under strict military rule in which woman are forced to procreate in a bid to repopulate the world.

It is based on a Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, and stars Elizabeth Moss and Joseph Fiennes.

It is available on Hulu overseas, a streaming service not yet available in New Zealand.

Just last week, The Handmaid's Tale was named second on a list of the most in-demand digital shows in New Zealand, topped only by 13 Reasons Why.

And the show's look was was recently revealed to have been inspired by South Island religious community Gloriavale.
