The Block booze drama proves the ultimate fizzer

Twins Ali and Julia apologised for breaking Block rules, admitting they drank a glass of wine on site.

Every season needs a villain and this year, twins Ali and Julia have been cast as The Block NZ's resident bad girls.

So when the pair were caught allegedly boozing on The Block, producers did their best to turn the drama into champagne supernova.

Promos promised serious trouble was brewing. Instead, it fizzled out into the ultimate anti-climax.

After initially denying the allegations, the twins admitted they had consumed wine on site. A glass of wine. Host Mark Richardson let them off with a warning.

In a Facebook Q&A after the episode, Ali and Julia said they regretted not telling the truth sooner but had felt ambushed.

"We get really defensive when we're ambushed," explained Ali. "In hindsight, we should have said 'yes, we drank wine on site'. We 100% regret that."

The pair also hinted that all is not quite as it seems on-air, revealing that the alcohol in question was consumed in week one.

"They saw us do this in week one, they should have spoken to us then. Instead they waited until week three," said Ali.

In fact, the teams only raised the issue after the twins won yet another team challenge - the latest in a string of wins.

The timing also raises questions about footage screened last week, which showed the twins' room supposedly laden with empty wine bottles. A room which was not completed in week one.

MediaWorks confirmed the scene was filmed in week four of production, with Richardson confronting the girls the next day.

When asked why they broke the rules, the twins explained: "When we drank on site late at night, after all our work, we weren't thinking about the rules. We weren't getting wasted. We weren't hiding anything."
