That Peter Pan trailer - yes, this is Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman is unrecognisable as Pirate Blackbeard in the first Pan trailer, which hit YouTube today.

Known as one of the nicest leading men in Hollywood, the handsome 46-year-old appears to relish the role of the bald, armour-clad villain.

Director Joe Wright (Hanna, Pride & Prejudice) helmed this origin story of Peter Pan, which puts a new spin on JM Barrie's 1911 novel.

Newcomer Levi Miller fills the titular role following performances in Australian films A Heartbeat Away (2011) and Great Adventures (2012).

Peter is a World War II orphan when he's abducted by Blackbeard's clownish henchman from his bed at the Lambeth Home for Boys.

He's then spirited away to Neverland by the baddie's magical flying ship.

It's hardly glamorous working in the Neverland mines, and it doesn't take long for Peter to be rescued by his future nemesis.

The young James Hook is a modest American-accented miner played by Garrett Hedlund, who helps Peter escape slave labour.

The pair encounter Oscar nominee Rooney Mara, who wears pink eyeshadow and a Peruvian-inspired headdress to play Tiger Lily.

The Caucasian 29-year-old scored the role over Kenyan-raised Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, French starlet Adèle Exarchopoulos, and Devery Jacobs - an actual Mohawk from Quebec.

At one point, Jackman's eyes fill with tears as he vulnerably asks the boy: 'Have you come to kill me, Peter?'

The adventurous, headstrong Peter responds: "I don't believe in bedtime stories."

Pan is due for release in July, 2015.
