As a victim of violence, Tuesday was an important day for Teri Hatcher.

The 49-year-old actress confidently dived into her past when attending the United Nations Official Commemoration Of The International Day For The Elimination Of Violence Against Women in New York City.

The former Desperate Housewives actress was seen wiping away her tears after giving an emotional speech.

It was revealed in 2006 that the brunette beauty had been sexually abused by her uncle at the young age of seven, and the actress spoke more about this incident during Tuesday's conference.

The star was "convinced it was her fault" and didn't speak about it for a while.

Now, Hatcher is keen on spreading the word against violence and the importance of breaking silence.

"Until violence against women is not a part of any woman's story, silence will not be a part of mine," the activist said during her speech.

In honour of the significant day, the mother-of-one donned a bright orange scarf while appearing conservative chic in black blouse, patterned black and white pencil skirt, and white pumps.

"Orange = official color 2 unite women against violence. Hang orange lights,ribbons.Tweet me 2 re-tweet #orangeurhood," the star tweeted to promote the cause.

'#Orangeurhood in #16days and add a #Twibbon to your profile pic!' the Superman star added with a link on Tuesday.

The hashtags #Orangeurhood and #16days are being used to raise awareness about the stand against violence on social media.

Orange YOUR Neighbourhood is part of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women, according to organisation's site.

The campaign runs from November 25 to December 10, which is Human Rights Day.

Meanwhile, Hatcher will next be seen in the romantic comedy Sundown which is slated for a 2015 release in the US.
