KEY POINTS:
American comedy-rock outfit Tenacious D - Hollywood actor Jack Black and his sidekick Kyle Gass - liken their stage show to renowned super-circus Cirque du Soleil.
They play the Logan Campbell Centre on Thursday, their second gig in Auckland. Last time they played to 400 people.
Black's new film, The Holiday, which is out now, may help attract one or two more this time round.
"Usually me and Kyle just show up and play music with no lights, no fancy anything," Black says.
"This time we have a full production, a full band, and it's more like Cirque du Soleil than a concert.
"I should warn you though - you don't want to come if you are planning seeing any other concerts this year. You probably shouldn't come to ours because we will ruin all other concert experiences.
"We rock."
Speaking from the United States, the pair - who modestly label themselves "the greatest band in the world" - say they will thrill, playing their best-known tracks, including Tribute, the only song sung at their first performance at Al's Bar in downtown Los Angeles more than a decade ago.
Black and Gass agree their rise to musical stardom was unexpected.
"I don't think you can ever plan on being international superstars, but we are," 46-year-old Gass said.
And Black adds: "I am a little surprised by our success.
"But then I am surprised by our failures. I am just always surprised in general."
Since forming in 1994, Tenacious D has performed alongside rock bands Beck, Tool and Pearl Jam.
In 2001 their self-titled album went platinum.
They've also had their own television show.
On February 8 their first film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, will be released in New Zealand.
The pair enlisted fellow rockers Meatloaf and the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl to feature in the film, which follows the life and making of Tenacious D.
"It is the full history and story of our first epic adventure, so if you don't know us you will," Black said.
"After the first 15 minutes of the movie you get the whole story of our coming together, of what we are and what we are about.
"Then follow us on a Lord of The Rings-esque journey to become the greatest band on the Earth."
