Grown ups just don't get it. But more often than not, they're right.
Four Auckland teenagers were thrown together this week when they won the AK07 Westpac Young Producers competition.
Judged by a panel of music industry insiders, including former Split Enz member Mike Chunn, the four winners will receive $20,000 to plan and producer a two-hour concert as part of next year's AKO7 Festival.
Initially working in teams of two, Sharina Bennenbroek and Sharina Parottam submitted a proposal for a public concert, featuring rock bands.
Dave Parker and Roxie Haines also proposed an outdoor concert, featuring indie musicians.
So it came as quite a surprise when the judges announced both teams had won _ but they had to work together to create a single event.
"They just thought we both had bands so we could combine them. So we sat down with them and explained that indie and rock are really, really different," said Haines.
Despite their initial reservations, Haines admits the teams are now working well together.
"The way it's worked out has been really, really good and I think the overall event we've come up with is going to be way better than either event individually."
The group has yet to come up with a name for the event, however, Haines said it would be based on an "indie vs. rock" theme.
"Red square is going to be split into two halves, with indie on one side, rock on the other, and the stage in the middle.'
Based in the Britomart Precinct, the all ages event will take place on St Patrick's Day (March 17), from 5pm to 7pm.
Bands performing at the event have yet to be finalised, but Haines said there would be six in total, three rock and three indie, and they would all be local Auckland acts.
