SUNDAY THEATRE: MURDER IN THE OUTBACK
When Joanne Lees claimed she had escaped a gunman who had killed her boyfriend, Peter Falconio, and then tried to abduct her, the media didn't buy her story. Her problem was that, just like Lindy Chamberlain in another celebrated case, she was judged to be too unemotional and aloof.
This drama follows the events that unfolded when Lees and Falconio were flagged down by a passing motorist on a remote stretch of road in the Northern Territory in 2001. Joanne Froggatt (Coronation Street, Life on Mars) plays Lees, who not only has to undergo the nightmare ordeal of escaping a killer but also faces vilification in the media, including revelations of drug use and having an affair with another man.
Veteran Aussie actor Bryan Brown plays the part of Rex Wild, the lead prosecution lawyer in the case against Bradley Murdoch, whose 2005 conviction and sentencing for murdering Falconio constitutes the final act.

MEET THE FOCKERS
Herald rating: * * *
The sequel to Meet The Parents is a retread of the first movie, with the addition of Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand as Gaylord's (Ben Stiller's) parents, Bernie and Roz Focker. Two liberal ex-hippies, they are at odds with Gaylord's soon to be father-in-law, ex-CIA operative Jack Byrnes (Robert De Niro). An easy Sunday night watch but it drags in places. (2004)

MAGIK AND ROSE
Herald rating: * * * *
A warm and funny local film, set in and around Hokitika's Wild Food Festival. Alison Bruce is Magik, a fortune teller searching for the daughter she put up for adoption years earlier. Nicola Murphy plays Rose, a chemist shop assistant married to the local artificial insemination technician, Stuart (Simon Ferry). Magik wants one more chance at motherhood, and causes a stir in town when she places an advertisement for a sperm donor in the local newspaper.
Made under Larry Parr's no-budget film scheme in association with the Film Commission, Magik and Rose had the not-so-handsome budget of $350,000. Writer-director Vanessa Alexander made up for any shortfall by ensuring the cast were thoroughly rehearsed before shooting, calling in favours and paying extras back with a wrap party.
The film was well-received: Alexander was whisked off to a screening at Cannes and went on to produce TV's Being Eve. (1999)

ABANDON
Herald rating: * *
Katie Holmes plays a senior at an exclusive college who deals with the sudden reappearance of an old boyfriend after a two-year absence. More a psychological drama than a modern teen thriller, but its lengthy running time doesn't deliver nearly enough to keep that finger off the remote. Look out for NZ's Melanie Lynskey as Mousy Julie. (2002)

THE BREAK-UP
Herald rating: * *
Over-hyped vehicle for Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, which took advantage of their short-lived, real-life relationship. Or maybe the real-life union was just publicity for the movie - who can tell these days? They play live-in lovers who slowly discover that their lives and values are worlds apart. (2006)
