VERONICA GUERIN
Herald rating: * * * *
Cate Blanchett plays Irish journalist Veronica Guerin, who in the mid-1990s covered the crime round for Dublin newspaper the Sunday Independent. The film starts with her assassination in 1996 and looks back at what led to it, highlighting her dangerous investigation into the underworld drug trade the Irish authorities had not acknowledged.
Guerin's stories focused on the rising tide of heroin abuse in Dublin and she became the enemy of the city's criminal fraternity. Her work led to stronger drug laws, but she lost her life in the process.
A nice surprise from director Joel Schumacher and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who are more often involved in Hollywood blockbusters than street-level true crime dramas.
Blanchett is excellent, but Guerin's motivation for digging this deep is never revealed, leaving the audience a little unsure why she was so willing to put her life on the line for her job. (2003)
