“Pretty much like a bear trap, my hand was eviscerated through the middle. Image is too graphic for Insta but extremely lucky that my tendons remained intact during the heavy crush”.
In a separate post that same day, which showed Bennett still in Dubai, the actor revealed the visible stitches on his hand as he sat in a spa pool.
“I’ve come to truly appreciate the body God granted me & how vulnerable any of us are to losing these gifts & this greatest gift of life,” he said.
The action star said he received medical attention at the Rashid Hospital in Dubai, adding that he was “indebted & forever thankful” to surgeon Dr Nebosjka, who he labelled “The Maestro”.
“[Nebosjka] literally saved my hand. Most of all, thank you to God for watching over me. It could have been a lot worse & I truly count my blessings”.
Bennett is no stranger to taking on high-octane, thrill-seeking activities.
He frequently shares footage of his travels on social media, with previous posts showing him on exotic adventures in Tahiti, Mexico and Egypt.
Only weeks before the accident, the actor revealed he had climbed Quarry Rock in Vancouver, Canada, and posted a picture of himself doing chin-ups from a tree atop Angels Landing in Utah’s Zion National Park.
He was also recently the host for the American version of the popular Australian TV show The Summit, in which contestants climbed a mountain in the Southern Alps with the goal of reaching the summit within 14 days.
Other famous roles he’s played include Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in the DC Comic series Arrow and Jack Hewitt in Shortland Street.
Bennett was born in Rotorua but moved to Australia when he was a few months old. In 1986, he returned to New Zealand to attend Te Aute College where he played rugby, something he eventually quit to pursue acting.
