KEY POINTS:
Sonny Bono's sidewalk star, dug up years ago for a construction project, has been set down again on Palm Canyon Drive and rededicated in front of the former entertainer and politician's bronze statue.
"It's unbelievably beautiful," said his widow, US Representative Mary Bono, who took part in the downtown ceremony with children Chianna and Chesare.
Sonny Bono died on January 5, 1998, when he slammed into a tree while skiing at the Heavenly Ski Resort on the Nevada-California state line. He was 62.
At the rededication, he was remembered as half the Sonny & Cher singing duo, Palm Springs mayor from 1988 to 1992 and congressman until his death.
