KEY POINTS:
America is today honouring those television shows that appear in the great wasteland of tv programming - daytime.
It's the 34th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, happening in Hollywood.
Daytime is the traditional time slot for talk shows hosted by the likes of Ricki Lake, Phil Donohue, Dr Phil, Ellen deGeneres and Oprah Winfrey. It's also the time for an array of soap operas.
Daytime television pioneer Lee Phillip Bell is receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at today's ceremony.
Along with her husband, Bell was responsible for the creation of CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless in 1973 and its sister show The Bold and the Beautiful in 1987.
Among the early winners today were Bob Barker for Best Game Show Host, while the Best Talk Show host category was snared by Ellen DeGeneres.
