My first job was... in a fish and chip shop.
It taught me... A healthy diet should include colours other than yellow.
My big break came... Getting into film school at the VCA (Victoria College of the Arts) in Melbourne. If they hadn't accepted me I'm pretty sure I would've given up thinking about being a filmmaker.
The last job I quit was... As the editor of a film magazine in Sydney. After six years there, I remembered I hadn't gone to film school to write about what other people were doing.
The most famous person I've ever met is... Bob Dylan.
They were... I don't really know. I was too scared to talk, so instead I just stood there and listened to him and my friend's dad talk about golf for half an hour.
The best time I've had on set was... Every day is the same - a joyful, exhilarating nightmare. It was that way on my short films and it was the same on my last movie shooting in six different countries with Brad Pitt and Ben Kingsley and Tilda Swinton. Always the same - pleasure and pain. The joy of watching a dream come to life, coupled with the fear that I'm making a mess of it.
But the worst was... See above.
My dream project would be... They're all dream projects. Because I write what I direct, I feel very lucky that the movies I make are always ones I've dreamed from the ground up.
