1. Penguin Books of Australia published the Pasta Bible, in which a recipe for tagliatelle and sardines directed home cooks to season with "freshly ground black people". Of course, this was a typo for "freshly ground black pepper" but the mortified publishers discovered the error only after a member of the public reported it to them. More than 7000 copies still sitting in their warehouse had to be destroyed and reprinted.
2. The 2013 Miss Universe Canada contestant, 26-year-old Denise Garrido, was unceremoniously stripped of the crown, which was awarded to contestant Riza Santos instead. Garrido was actually the third runner-up in the competition, but had been mistakenly declared the winner thanks to an inexperienced worker who made a single mistake while typing the judges' handwritten scores into a computer.
1. The streets of Jackson, Mississippi apparently have potholes that rival the worst in the US, but the city does not have an adequate budget to fix them, according to Mayor Tony Yarber. His remedy, offered earnestly to constituents in August: prayer. "I believe we can pray potholes away."
2. Selfies are not only stupid, they can be dangerous as driver Jordan Toner, 29, found out. While attempting to lean into a seven-person selfie among his passengers, he crashed the vehicle into a tree, causing numerous injuries.
