In 2009, in the little Swiss town of Teufen, conceptual artists Frank and Patrik Riklin converted a 1980s-era nuclear fallout shelter to the "Null Stern Hotel," an underground facility that accommodates 14 guests in a concrete bunker fitted with blast doors nearly two feet thick. It's an art installationfirst, a hotel next — a place where people can think about their surroundings. There are no windows, only a CCTV camera displaying the outside world, and they retained the institutional paint scheme of pastel blue and yellow. The site was nominated for best innovation of the year in the 2009 Worldwide Hospitality Awards, and GEO magazine ranked it among the Top 100 hotels in Europe the following year. Shattering the knowledge silos
"It's always so interesting to see what people do and don't know," Tweets Greg Jenner. "Part of the problem with the massive splintering of media channels into a bazillion places is not everyone sees the same things anymore. What's the most widely-known fact which will blow the minds of people who don't know it?" 1. The name Chubby Checker being a spoof of Fats Domino. 2. Your eyeballs never grow! You are born with full-sized eyeballs which is why some babies look so big-eyed. 3. Virtually all the bananas we eat now in the world are clones of fruit from a single banana tree grown in the UK in 1830. 4. Your bum crack is the same length as your foot. (I actually don't know if this is true but it sounds like it would be, doesn't it?)
