"In the '70s we had a shopping reporter on the local Rotorua radio station," writes Ann. "I remember her recommending a library book 'written by James Hadley Chase, who is dead at the moment'. And when the town gained its first Public Typist's office, with great enthusiasm this reporter told us that 'more and more local businessmen are taking advantage of the public typist'."
There exists a condition where a person's little toe just falls off. Dactylolysis spontanea is an extremely rare form of autoamputation and this is what to look out for: "First a little band of tough tissue forms around the base of the pinkie toe. Eventually the band gets smaller and tighter, and the toe swells up. The sufferer gets to watch as the band gets narrower and tighter, breaking the bones in the toe as it constricts. The toe ends up hanging by a 'pedicle', a tiny bit of tissue and bone. Eventually, even that gives up and the toe drops off."
