The Vision-Dieter were US$19.95 weight-loss eyeglasses, created by Arkansas entrepreneur John D. Miller. They had a different lens for each eye: one brown and the other blue. One weekend in 2013 eight people from Kalachi, Kazakhstan (pop. 640) fell asleep and were unable to stay awake for any longer than it took to go to the bathroom or eat a little food. As the months went by more people were affected. People felt nauseous and dizzy; they hallucinated, ranting about images only they could see and at times becoming borderline violent. More than 100 people fell ill at some point. Even a cat was affected. Scientists tested the earth, water, and local food because of the nearby uranium mines. Doctors could find nothing wrong with the patients, and no common factors. Finally in 2015 authorities announced that high concentrations of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons from the mines caused a lack of oxygen in the area. (Source: Mental Floss)
