KEY POINTS:
Shortland Street serial killer Joey Henderson met a swift end last night, as the maniacal killer jumped to his death from the roof of an inner-city high rise.
Surrounded by police, the character - and the plot line - finally ran out of options and was written out of the soap opera for good.
The serial killer plotline was introduced in August last year and proved a ratings winner for the 15-year-old series.
Henderson was revealed as the killer just before Christmas, seeing ratings soar to above 600,000 viewers.
However, fan site feedback indicating viewers were growing tired of the ongoing story, and producers decided to end the plot this week with a special three-part denouement.
Writers are now said to be focused on lightening the series up, with an emphasis on romance and comedy in the coming months.
There is also set to be a surprise guest coming to the series, as Shortland Street celebrates its 4000th episode in June.
