Seal, 48, hinted at the split last Friday when he left a cryptic message on his Twitter page.
"The End," he wrote, while linking to an abstract image - believed to be a winged tattoo on his forearm, and no doubt a nod to Klum's days as a Victoria's Secret "angel".
'Remain civil and to retain one's dignity ...'
And just hours after confirming the end of his marriage, the Kiss from a Rose singer opened up about the shock split while doing the publicity rounds for his new album, Soul 2.
"We have a tremendous amount of love and respect for each other, and also, of course, our children are our first priority," Seal said in an interview with PBS talk show host Tavis Smiley (airing on Friday in the US).
"I think we've pretty much said everything that we needed to say about it in the statement that we released."
Asked about the possibility of their split turning ugly, he said, "We're just not those kind of people, we never really have been."
He explained: "But how does one stay focused? Um, just because you decide to separate, I don't think you all of a sudden stop loving each other, I don't think you all of a sudden stop becoming friends. Especially when there are other things to take into consideration, like family.
"So to be honest, it's not really that difficult and it's not really that much of an issue. What one has to do in this situation is to remain civil and to retain one's dignity and to be professional and to understand we are not the only people on this planet that go through this. It is just, unfortunately, a chapter of life."

Seal also taped an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he spoke openly about the separation, and explained why he's still wearing his wedding ring.
"I think we were shocked," he told DeGeneres of the split. "You go into these things with the greatest intentions when you say 'I do' and you say ''Till death do us part.' Those vows hold value. They are not just words. These things happen. We pretty much said how we feel and made it clear in the release statement."
He continued: "But, for intents and purposes of this show, you just grow apart after awhile. You try and you work through it and the thing that you quickly realize when you are married and you become a parent is you do the best that you can. It makes you actually appreciate your parents a lot more.
"The thing that I'm most proud about this great woman who married - and I really do mean that from the bottom of my heart - is that together she has given me four incredible gifts ... four beautiful children."
Describing Klum as "the most wonderful woman in the world," Seal added that their priority was to keep things civil for the sake of the family.
"I think the operative here is that we are civil to each other and we both have a tremendous amount of respect and love and we try and do this with as much dignity as we possibly can," he maintained. "And of course, when you have four children, you hope and pray that the rest of the world will respect that we have four children and that their little hearts are at stake, too."
He also said he has no intention of removing his wedding ring anytime soon.
"I think it's just pretty much a token of how I feel about this woman," he shared. "We have eight years. Eight wonderful years together. Just because we have decided to separate doesn't necessarily mean you take off your ring and you're no longer connected to that person.
"We will be connected in many ways till the rest of our lives...through our children and also through this tremendous admiration, respect and love that we have for each other. Will we wear the ring for the rest of our lives? Who knows? But right now it feels really comfortable on my hand, so I have intentions of taking it off anytime soon."

Meanwhile, TMZ speculates that the couple split because of Seal's alleged anger issues.
According to the scandal sheet, Klum, 38, was the one who called an end to the marriage.
"Sources directly connected with the couple tell us ... Heidi's decision to divorce Seal has nothing to do with a third person. There is no issue of infidelity.
"But Seal's inability to control his anger has become too much for Heidi to take."
Total tosh, says the Daily News.
"These are two huge personalities. And when you love hard, you fight hard. And they both fought," said a source.
"To paint this as all Seal and his temper is really, really inaccurate. This is not a man with a volcanic temper. It's just not true. He sings love songs for crying out loud."
The couple tied the knot on a beach in Mexico in May 2005, and were famous for renewing their vows every year on their wedding anniversary
In 2010, Seal said of the tradition: "Each year, Heidi and I get remarried. It's a great party, but for about an hour, we go off on our own down to a private beach. We sit there with the kids and read vows to each other as the sun sets. It's a very special moment to us."
Although their statement made no mention of imminent proceedings, TMZ maintains that Klum will file divorce papers in Los Angeles County Superior Court as early as this week.
The way they were ...
