Shia LaBeouf isn't one to sugar the pill. He also doesn't pull any punches when it comes to dishing on hooking up with his leading ladies, including former

Transformers

co-star Megan Fox.

But it's LaBeouf's comments about former bot-battling co-star Fox that's got tongues wagging.

mag if he hooked up with Fox while working on 2007's

Transformers

, the 25-year-old actor nodded in the affirmative.

"Look, you're on the set for six months, with someone who's rooting to be attracted to you, and you're rooting to be attracted to them," he explains.

"I never understood the separation of work and life in that situation," he adds. "But the time I spent with Megan was our own thing, and I think you can see the chemistry onscreen."

LaBeouf played Samuel Witwicky opposite Fox's Mikaela Banes in the first two

Transformers

flicks.

Hold on a cotton-picking minute. Was Fox involved with her now-husband

LaBeouf's spluttered response: "I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know," then adding, "It was what it was."

Details, indeed. How cryptic. How...telling.

Not surprisingly, Fox's rep declined to comment.

Fox, who wed Green one year ago in Hawaii, isn't the only costar that LaBeouf speaks about in the interview. He also admits that he and

"It was sort of disastrous," LaBeouf says. "Neither one of us, I think, were in love. Just sort of experimenting or whatever."

Sounds like that encounter was more of a hit than his one date with

Hillary Duff

, which was "probably the worst date either of us have ever had," according to LaBeouf.

On his ex-girlfriend Mulligan, whom he dated for more than a year before splitting last October, he says: "I still love her," adding, "I think she's a f***ing awesome person and an incredible actress. We're still pals. I wouldn't take any of it back, and I don't think she would either. It just ran its course."

Beyond taking a trip down lovers' lane, LaBeouf also rips on previous flick,

"He's [Oliver Stone] trying to play nice. But for a movie like

Wall Street

that had so much bite the first time around to come out without fangs and preach a message of hope wasn't what people were looking for."

And as for what went wrong with

Transformers 2

, LaBeouf readily admits: "None of us had any clue what we were doing.

"We were flying by the seat of our pants, with an unlimited budget," he says, adding that he and the rest of the cast were shooting without a finished script.

As for his bad-boy rep - there's

, and numerous paparazzi run-ins - LaBeouf says that despite his demeanour, he's an honest old bean.

"I would like to be

George Clooney

-diplomatic," he says.

"I just don't have the wherewithal yet or the inner serenity. My bullsh*t meter is tuned very sensitive.

"The minute it starts kicking up, I get back to truth, and sometimes that involves, you know, 'I don't want to take a picture.' And if that's the case, am I an a**hole for being honest? Or am I an a**hole for being dishonest, smiling in your picture and I f**king hate being there? Which one is worse? These are the questions I ask myself that George Clooney doesn't ask."
