KEY POINTS:
Anywhere I Lay My Head, on which Scarlett Johansson sings a selection of Tom Waits songs, is out in a few months. It follows the screen star's other musical forays - she's appeared in videos for Bob Dylan, Justin Timberlake, Will.i.am's clip for Barack Obama, and she sang back-up to the Jesus & Mary Chain at the Coachella Festival early last year.
Oh, and she sang Summertime for Hollywood charity album Unexpected Dreams: Songs from the Stars.
It all led to recording the Waits collection - not once but twice, as she was unhappy with the initial results.
She redid the recordings with Dave Sitek of New York art-rock outfit TV on the Radio, which also involved David Bowie on backing vocals.
The results reportedly aren't exactly J-Lo. And the songs' original writer doesn't seem to mind.
"I'd always been a fan of Tom Waits," says Johansson.
"I originally was going to do standards and include one Tom Waits song as well as Cole Porter songs, but that seemed like a weird combination and this was a natural progression.
"I haven't met him; I think he keeps to himself.
"Of course before we went into it we made sure he was into the idea. I sent him some scratch recordings, as I didn't want him to be like, `Please don't touch these songs'.
"But he was into it, so that was great, and he's had a really good reaction to the album."
The album is due out in May.
