The big screen version of television hit comedy Sex and the City has catapulted to the top of the North American box office in its opening weekend.
The first film treatment of the fashion-conscious four: Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte, raked in US$56.8 million ($73.29 million), pushing last week's box office champ, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull out of the top spot.
Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon celebrated the film's premieres in London and New York, but were unable to make it down under for the Australian opening.
