Actress Jodie Foster's role in new sci-fi film Elysium was originally written for a male actor, but director Neill Blomkamp had a change of heart.
Foster, best known for her role in the thriller Silence of the Lambs, was determined to land a role in Blomkamp's new movie, but there wasn't a part for her initially.
The District 9 director later decided to cast a female and put together a short list of actresses, which included Foster.
Foster turned out to be a huge fan of Blomkamp and District 9 and wanted to be in his next movie in whatever capacity was available.
"I felt it was a perfect movie that I wished I'd been a part of," the actress said.
