KEY POINTS:
A great deal of Adrienne Jensen's new television show is about appreciating the music that's gone before.
"I think a lot of younger people don't realise [most] of the music they love has been done before - and in some cases, done better," says the host of Ashtray Hearts, a show on Alt TV (Sky Channel 65) on Sunday night.
Which is why she's been sourcing "odd, rare and archival" stuff from around the world to play on the music video programme that takes its name from a song by 60s and 70s prog-rock band, Captain Beefheart. And, in some ways, Jensen feels the same way about clothes.
She loves a vintage item.
"Vintage is something that allows you to costume yourself as opposed to just wearing a uniform".
Who are your favourite designers?
I love Kate Sylvester's current collection. I'm a life-long Zambesi fan, also love Tanya Carlson and Wallace Rose, Little Brother Ts and Hailwood's vintage print T-shirts. Internationally, Prada/Miu Miu, Lover and the ever-subversive Vivienne Westwood.
Who or what inspires you?
Visually, iconic characters in film: David Lynch's wild heroines, plus Nastassja Kinski in Paris Texas, Monica Bellucci, Kelly Lynch in Drugstore Cowboy. And of course rock'n'roll royalty like Cyrinda Foxe and Bebe Buell.
Who does the best shoes and why?
I'd love some of the Louis Vuitton wedges that are about at the moment. They scream glamour, but being a wedge they're easier to walk in. I also have a weakness for handmade inlaid 60s cowboy boots. And Agent Provocateur's Maribou pumps to bring out the Stepford wife in any woman.
What endures through the seasons?
My favourite T-shirts.
What do you really want this season?
My hair to hurry up and grow. And the jersey dress from Kate Sylvester.
What's the one thing everyone should have in their wardrobe?
Slippers. They soothe the soul - and the sole.
Best beauty tip?
Keep out of the sun! Lose the yucky orange fake tan. Elizabeth Arden's Prevage actually works.
Whose wardrobe would you most like to raid?
Been said before perhaps but the entire Sex and the City wardrobe. And I'd love to raid Trelise Cooper's under-wear range.
Most cherished items?
Bits and pieces that belonged to my nana and poppa, who are both gone now. A boar's tooth which is my lucky charm and was given to me by someone very special. My daughter's baby teeth. A treble clef gold charm necklace I found in an op-shop, and my collection of vintage 60s nylon nighties.
Best sartorial advice?
If the cut of the costume indicates temperament and intellect, then the colour indicates temper and heart. It's a quote from Thomas Carlyle, but for me it sums things up.
When I was in high school I wore?
A pair of Doc Martens my parents hated. They wouldn't allow me to wear them on our property. I was allowed to wear them out, but had to leave them in the letterbox when I got home. I own a pair to this day.
