NZ FESTIVAL: THE LAST WESTERN HERETIC
This documentary about famed theologian Lloyd Geering arrives in the wake of his 2006 autobiography Wrestling with God and his appointment to that exclusive club - Members of the Order of New Zealand, one of many such honours for the foundation professor of religious studies at Victoria University.
But the programme's title reflects Lloyd Geering's most famous mantle - in 1967 he was tried by the Presbyterian Church for heresy after he, an ordained minister, preached a sermon questioning the immortality of the human soul having earlier written articles doubting the physical resurrection of Jesus, views he still holds.
In the documentary filmed here and in Israel by director Monique Oomen the 89-year-old intellectual reflects on his sometimes controversial life and there is a detailed discussion of nine of his principal ideas.
