Sarah Jessica Parker
is most definitely up for more "Sex" in the future.
Despite last year's sequel being given a critical panning and underperforming at the box office, Parker says there's still life left in the
Sex and the City
franchise.
In an interview with the
Los Angeles Times
, SJP says she would relish slipping back into Carrie Bradshaw's Manolos again - but not just yet.
"I would go back,"
while working on the set of her new movie,
I Don't Know How She Does It
.
"I'd definitely tell that [third] story, and I know [series creator] Michael [Patrick King] would do it right. But maybe not now. Maybe in five years, you know?"
Parker says she wants to focus on other projects first.
"In a million years, who could get away from it [SATC]?" she says.
"It's just that 'if I'm not scared again that's not good for me.' That's literally no good for me. If I'm not terrified and nauseous and worried the first two weeks of production, then what's going to happen? You could wither on the vine. It's like if you can't use your leg. It just atrophies."
Eh?
She also expressed reservations about a rumoured
Sex and the City
prequel starring a younger Bradshaw. Tongues have been wagging that
Gossip Girl
's
Blake Lively
is in talks to play a 19-year-old Bradshaw in an adaptation of author Candace Bushnell's 2010 prequel
The Carrie Diaries
.
"The prequel is about breathing new life into the story and exploring Carrie's first few months in NYC and the beginning of her relationship with an older man," an insider recently told Grazia magazine.
But Parker has raised a cynical eyebrow over the prequel talk.
"I was like, Wha-a-a-a-t?'" Parker tells the
Times
of her reaction to the reports.
"There are a lot of important and interesting stories that 21-year-olds can tell. I don't begrudge any 21-year-old the opportunity to tell their stories. They prove to us on an everyday basis that they're interesting. Even their narcissism is interesting. Even their inertia is interesting. Even their tonal speech patterns are interesting."
"But I don't think we can pretend to go back," she added. "It's creating two histories. It's like, 'Oh I didn't know that about Carrie Bradshaw.'"
Parker's not the only one hankering for another Sex sequel.
Kristin Davis
, who played Charlotte York Goldenblatt in the TV series and last two movies, says she's up for a third outing.
Speaking to British newspaper the
Daily Mirror
in October, she said: "There are no plans that I know of but I would love to do a third film.
"We all want to do it, I guess it's just figuring out whether it's the right thing to do and if we can move the characters forward any more."
Sadly,
Chris Noth
, who plays Parker's hubby in the franchise, didn't get the memo. As far as he's concerned, the franchise is dead.
Noth let rip on a
New York Magazine
reporter last September.
"It's over. The franchise is dead," Noth barked. "The press killed it."
"Your magazine f***ing killed it. New York Magazine. It's like all the critics got together and said, 'This franchise must die.' Because they all had the exact same review. It's like they didn't see the movie. Got any more gum?"
Despite Parker's enthusiasm for another outing, I can't help but wonder: Five years down the line, will fans still be interested in a third
Sex and the City
movie?
