While immensely popular, the so-called "hoverboards" have had ongoing issues with batteries that can overheat, catch fire or in some cases, explode.
"Safety is our number one priority at Virgin Australia," a spokeswoman for the airline said. "Due to safety concerns, Virgin Australia, along with all major Australian airlines and many around the world, do not permit the carriage of lithium ion battery operated small recreational vehicles, such as self-balancing boards, hoverboards or aero wheels, as checked-in or carry-on baggage."
The boards have also been banned by Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, American Airlines and several other international airlines.
The actor has gained quite a reputation for having a bad temper.
Back in 1999, Crowe was captured on video during a brawl outside a Coff's Harbour bar that went on for 24 minutes. The video was later used in an attempt to exhort money from him.
A few years later in 2002, Crowe allegedly got into a fight with New Zealand businessman Eric Watson inside the London branch of Japanese restaurant chain Zuma. The fight was broken up by British actor Ross Kemp.
In 2005, Crowe was arrested after assaulting a New York hotel clerk with a telephone, after he was unable to make a phone call to his wife in Australia. He later described the incident as "possibly the most shameful situation that I've ever gotten myself in... and I've done some pretty dumb things in my life".
