Rugrats set to return to screens - but with a twist

Popular 90s cartoon Rugrats is getting a reboot.

Nineties babies listen up — the cartoon that defined your childhood is returning, with Nickelodeon greenlighting a reboot of Rugrats.

But the decision to revive the favourite series hasn't been welcomed by everyone, with fans slamming plans for a live action movie.

Rugrats will first return to televisions in a new animated series spanning 26 episodes, Variety reports.

Creators Paul Germain, Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó have signed on as executive producers on the new series.

The cartoon will also get the big screen treatment with a twist, with a live action film featuring CGI characters slated for release in November 2020.

I ain't even gonna say a thing about the #Rugrats reboot. It is not aimed at me and that's fine. Plenty of things I enjoy already to consume instead. I am going to be a mature adult and simply focus on the multitude of things I am looking forward to!

The new TV series and movie will include fan favourites Chuckie, Tommy, Angelica, Phil, Lil and Susie, as well as introducing a new generation of characters, Variety reported.

First airing on Nickelodeon in 1991, Rugrats lasted nine seasons and spawned three movies — 1998's The Rugrats Movie, 2000's Rugrats in Paris: The Movie and 2003's Rugrats go Wild.

Plans for the Rugrats revival comes after Nickelodeon announced reboots of Blue's Clues, Invader Zim and Rocko's Modern Life.
