Ratchet and Clank film 'amazingly dull', widely hated

The new Ratchet and Clank movie is out, and just about everyone seems to hate it.

Based on the video game of the same name, the animated film follows heroic duo Ratchet and Clank in a struggle to stop an alien called Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy.

The cast features the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Rosario Dawson, John Goodman and Paul Giamatti, and critics have praised it for sticking so close to its source material - but that's about where the praise ends.

The film has only one star on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film might appeal to its youngest viewers, but otherwise "offers little to truly recommend".

Cinema Blend said the film was "amazingly dull" with a script beyond saving, adding that it was aptly named, as Ratchet and Clank "are the sounds your mind will make when trying to wrap your head around how this movie got made in the first place".

The AV Club

said it was formulaic, "cheap looking" with "no pizzazz", and "sits at the zero point of watch-ability".

And with a star rating of just two, The Guardian said: "everything about this computer animation appears cheap and tacky. Ratchet's fur has the synthetic look of something you might win at a fairground hook-a-duck stall; the plotline borrows freely from other, better films but fails to steal any decent jokes".

Ratchet and Clank is due to release in New Zealand later this year, and has also spawned a new video game for Playstation 4, based on the movie (which was based on the original video game).
