Twelve years after the Phantom last graced a New Zealand stage, Andrew Lloyd Webber's famed musical is set to return to our shores, playing a limited season at Auckland's oldest theatre The Civic.
One of the longest-running musicals in history, The Phantom of the Opera comes to Auckland from October 14, following a year-long Australian tour.
Australian singer Anthony Warlow will play the Phantom with New Zealand soprano Ana Marina playing the object of his affection, Christine Daae.
The production will feature a cast of 37, who will don more than 230 costumes throughout the 2-hour show.
Based on the 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l'Opeéra by Gaston Leroux, the musical tells the the story of a disfigured musical genius, living in the dark shadows of the Paris Opera House. After hearing the hypnotic voice of a young soprano, the Phantom becomes besotted with the girl, but turns mad with jealousy when he discovers she is in love with someone else.
Andrew Lloyd Webber first debuted his musical version of the story in London in 1986. Twenty-two years later the production has won many awards and still attracts sell-out crowds.
