Lady Gaga dominated the MTV Video Music Awards last night, bagging an impressive eight moonmen trophies. But, as is the norm with the eccentric warbler, it was her sartorial selections that stole the show.
Gaga waltzed down the white carpet in an avant-garde Alexander McQueen gown (she looked like a peacock on heat), and a pair of ankle-breaking Armadillo 12-inch heels. It was a look that was almost conservative by her standards.
But that wasn't the outfit that got tongues wagging.
Raw deal
Picking up her eighth award of the evening, for Video of the Year, Gaga rocked up in a *beefy ensemble (designed by Franc Fernandez), reminiscent of her controversial "meat suit" she wore on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan.
Word at the water cooler is that Gaga's ensemble - accessorised by meat boots, a meat hat and a meat purse - was made of raw meat, but this has yet to be confirmed nor denied.
Needless to say, her gory getups have caused a commotion with...PETA.
"In her line of business, Lady Gaga has a hard time being 'over the top,' and wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people upset by butchery than impressed by it-and that means a lot of young people will not be buying her records if she keeps it up," said Ingrid Newkirk, PETA, in a statement.
Newkirk also speculated that Gaga would have had a distinctive whiff about her.
"Meat is the decomposing flesh of an abused animal who didn't want to die, and after being under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling with maggots - not too attractive, really," she said.
"If Lady Gaga continues to wear meat, the perfect accessory would be a PETA vegetarian/vegan starter kit."
No flies on her
Never one to back away from expressing herself, Gaga made her way to meet up with Ellen DeGeneres after the awards bash, and explained her decision to wear the outlandish outfit.
"I get most of your outfits," DeGeneres probed. "You have the meat bikini on and now the meat dress...because I'm vegan...What is the purpose of the meat?"
Gaga says she didn't intend for her outfit to cause any controversy, saying, "Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment free human being on the earth."
She added: "However, it has many interpretations, but for me this evening, if we don't stand up for what we believe in and if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones."
She also offered a slightly less ethereal interpretation of her flesh-flashing outfit, saying it's a statement that says, "I am not a piece of meat."
Ellen then presented Gaga with an alternative, holding up a veggie bikini and skirt for the pop star. Hardy har har!
Oh, and Gaga also confirmed that her new album would be called Born This Way, during the awards ceremony, saying: "The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life - it's utter liberation."
