KEY POINTS:
Oscar-winning New Zealand actress Anna Paquin has been nominated for an Emmy Award.
When the nominations for the 59th Emmys were announced yesterday, Paquin was named with Samantha Morton and Australians Toni Collette, Judy Davis and Greta Scacchi for best supporting actress in a TV movie or mini-series.
Paquin is nominated for her work in the HBO TV movie Western Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which picked up the most Emmy nominations - 17.
Paquin was 11 when she won a best supporting actress Oscar for 1993's The Piano, which starred Holly Hunter as a mute mail-order bride who travels to 19th-century New Zealand with her daughter, Flora.
Since then her roles have ranged from a mutant in the X-Men films to a smart teenager in the chick flick She's All That and a moody student in The Squid and the Whale.
This year's Emmys hold plenty of intrigue in other categories.
The Sopranos, which received 15 nominations, will go head-to-head with Grey's Anatomy, Heroes, House and Boston Legal in the major TV drama awards.
In the comedy categories, it is a showdown between Ugly Betty, Entourage, Two and a Half Men and the American version of The Office. Desperate Housewives, Lost and 24 did not fare as well as previously.
