KEY POINTS:
The University of Auckland Academy of Music's inaugural music appreciation series for adults proved extremely popular last year. That eight-week course focused on broadening a general knowledge of classical music. Now academy director Dr Leonie Holmes is bringing in phase two, introducing orchestral instruments with live demonstrations and performances by Academy of Music students.
Sections of the orchestra - strings, wind, brass and percussion - will be introduced individually, then moving on to how they work together. Holmes will also show how composers use various instruments in their works, and discuss the relationship between the orchestra and the conductor.
The course offers special reference to works scheduled to be performed in Auckland this year, with works by Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorak, Wagner, Shostakovich and Stravinsky. The course will be held on Wednesday evenings for eight weeks from May 9, at the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland, Epsom Campus.
