The Disney spectacle The Lion King has opened in South Africa with a star-studded gala that included United States talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.
The musical is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and the South African run has been called a homecoming for the show whose score, choreography and story all have roots in the country.
Winfrey brought with her to the show all 149 pupils from the exclusive girls academy she opened near Johannesburg earlier this year.
