KEY POINTS:
New Zealand author Linda Niccol has won the British Short Screenplay Competition for 2006.
The Wellington writer beat 2000 rivals to scoop top prize for her script for the short film The Handkerchief. It was shortlisted by the New Zealand Film Commission, which described it as a "touching, well-crafted script".
Niccol said the screenplay was a joy to write. The Handkerchief will be made in Britain next year.
