"The film had terrible reviews but you would think Keanu could do better than less than £100" a source told British newspaper The Sun.
"In his Matrix days he earned over £100 million from the series."
Exposed's shocking failure may be down to its troubled and controversial production history, with original director Gee Malik Linton eventually battling to have his name removed from the film's credits.
The filmmaker resorted to legal action after studio bosses at Lionsgate allegedly insisted the film, originally a bilingual drama in Spanish and English titled Daughter of God, was re-cut into a crime thriller focusing on Reeves.
"(We went) from a masterpiece to 'here we go again,' taking away the pure reality of the story, the core," Gabriel Lopez, an actor from the film told US website The Root.
"Taking away everything because of Keanu Reeves, because he could sell more with his face."
The gamble on Reeves' star power to deliver box-office success appears to have failed spectacularly in Britain, and the film has only performed slightly better internationally, taking $208,000 around the world.
On IMDB, one viewer wrote: "As you absorb each scene, attempting to find some correlation to the previous one, they'll whip it away from you, leaving a bitter taste in your memory that will only grow as scenes pile up.
"It's like waiting for a surgeon to perform a delicate operation on your loved one, and the local butcher walks through the door with his cleaver. It's painful."
Reeves has another flop of note to his name, 47 Ronin which in 2013 reportedly lost Universal Studios US$152 million. He's currently working on a sequel to John Wick.
