They were the A-list couple well on their way to proving Hollywood relationships can actually last.
Then, in September, the world was left reeling after Aussie actress Naomi Watts announced she was separating from her partner of 11 years Liev Schreiber. The couple, who began seeing each other in 2005, share two boys Samuel, aged seven, and Alexander, aged nine.
Watts opened up for the first time to Stellar on Saturday discussing everything from her fear of change to ageing in the spotlight.
"I feel I'm in a good place in my life and I want to make sure my kids are healthy, my kids are happy and things are going to go well. Those are my hopes for me and for all of us," she told Stellar.
As the ambassador for L'Oreal Paris, the King Kong star admits ageing in the spotlight hasn't been the easiest facet of being famous.
"It's probably a bit harder ageing in the spotlight, and it's tough getting older on camera and feeling the pressure because there's more judgment and more focus on you," she says.
While some actresses and celebrities may use their looks to gain acting roles and further their career, Watts has carefully picked roles that aren't based on aesthetics.
"For the most part, I've chosen roles that aren't centred on vanity," she explains. "I'm prepared to look old if I have to, that's not a problem."
When it comes to The Impossible star's new relationship status, Watts remains her usual, easygoing self.
"I feel like change is always scary, but that's only because transition for anyone is new and you wonder how things are going to go."
The couple announced their split back in September with a joint statement saying "Over the past few months we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple.
"It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship."
Watts is currently filming in New York for the Netflix show Gypsy, slated to premiere in 2017.
