Some time ago, the computer-animated "talking animal" sub-genre reached saturation point, then earlier this year the film Rango was released and breathed considerable life back into the form. Now, with Rio - The Movie, the genre takes a concerted leap backwards. There's a lot of colour and energy to be found in this tale of a rare blue parrot lost in the Brazilian city, and it should keep the littlies distracted, but it feels like a remix of elements from Madagascar, Up! and other family movies.
The Social Network's Jesse Eisenberg voices the lead, and a lot of his personality comes through. Anne Hathaway also brings energy to her love-interest role. It's not an offensive movie, but there's a serious dearth of new ideas here.
