Rating: 3.5/5
Prolific British television writer/director Stephen Poliakoff (The Lost Prince) is behind this sumptuous thriller set at the beginning of World War II.
Romola Garai stars as a privileged actress who stumbles on some disturbing family secrets regarding England's involvement in the war. Withits lushly photographed estates, modern day bookends and the presence of cast members Garai and Juno Temple, the film can't help but evoke 2007's Atonement.
But this is more of a traditional conspiracy thriller, albeit very watchable, rendered all the more interesting for its historical setting.
Garai's enormous eyes invite generous amounts of sympathy as her fate becomes perilous, and the impressive supporting cast (Bill Nighy, Julie Christie) keep things classy. Gorgeous to look at and with finely wrought tension, this is well-worth seeking out.
