Singer Morrissey has confirmed long-running rumours he formed a close relationship with a male photographer in the 1990s.
The former The Smiths frontman has consistently dodged questions about his sexuality throughout his career, and in his hotly-anticipated memoirs, released on Thursday, he recalls how he became "we" for "the first time" in his 30s after meeting Jake Walters.
The shaven-headed snapper was a constant presence at the singer's side for two years during the mid-1990s, and although he does not reveal whether they were lovers, Morrissey drops heavy hints of a romance when he details how close the pair was.
He and Walters shared hotel suites and were often photographed together, and the singer even recalls how Walters brought him tea while he was having a bath.
In his book, titled Autobiography, Morrissey writes, "For the first time in my life the eternal 'I' becomes 'we', as, finally, I can get on with someone... Jake and I neither sought nor needed company other than our own for the whirlwind stretch to come.
