"Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."
Moore's statement followed 22-year-old Sara Leal's allegations that she slept with Kutcher, 33, on the weekend of his sixth wedding anniversary in September this year. Leal claimed she spent the night with Kutcher at San Diego's Hard Rock Hotel because the actor said that he was "separated" from Moore.
And it wasn't the first time allegations of infidelity emerged.
Last year, Brittney Jones claimed that she hooked up with Kutcher after meeting him at a bowling alley.
In a recent interview with TMZ, Jones said she felt "vindicated" by the impending divorce.
"Although divorce is often sad I do feel somewhat vindicated," she told the website.
"For so long people have thought that I was dishonest or just making up my passionate nights with Ashton, when in fact I was being used," she added.
"Ashton told me that both he and Demi had an 'open relationship' and that he was not in fact cheating. Now I can tell all the facts about how Ashton really was, and hopefully people will believe my side of the story."
She concluded: "I feel for Demi very much and wish her nothing but the best during this hard time."
'Ashton was ready to end it...'
Fast forward to People magazine's cover story this week, and it's open season as far as rampant speculation is concerned.
According to the mag, allegations of infidelity were but the tip of the iceberg.
"The marriage had been deteriorating for a long time," claims a source.
"Ashton was ready to end it, [but] he wanted to wait for Demi to actually do it. He loved her but couldn't live with her.
"[Demi] really wanted to save the marriage but couldn't deal with the pain of his cheating."
Added a second source: "They were fed up with each other."
"If anyone was uncomfortable with the age difference, it was Demi, not Ashton," imparted yet another mole. "She drove him crazy after a while with questions and doubts."
People reporter Carlos Greer also dished to Extra: "[The two] pretty much have been living this nightmare marriage." he said, "Demi doesn't want to be perceived as the jilted wife. She just couldn't put up with it any longer."
'Open marriage-type situations...'
Meanwhile, scalpel-tongued comedian Chelsea Handler has added fuel to the rumour mill and sounded off on her own theories behind the split.
"I don't know them personally very well, but I think it's pretty obvious that they probably had a lot of open marriage-type situations," she said during an appearance on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight on Friday.
"You think so?" probed Morgan.
"Well, yeah. I think they probably had a lot of good times with some other women," she said, adding, "I mean, read between the lines."
She continued: "They probably had a lot of threesomes that led to twosomes without Demi and that leads to a divorce."
Moore and Kutcher had appeared together on his show just six months ago.
"To me they seemed very much in love at the time,' noted Morgan.
The couple had spoken about the importance of making their relationship a priority.
"I think you have to make your relationship a priority," said Moore at the time, "and that's a difficult balance when you have work and the combination of career and family. A big part of it is we spend very little time apart. That's one of the key things."
Added Kutcher: "I'd also say working on the relationship when the relationship is good," he said. "As far as marriage goes, I think most people set getting married as the goal, as opposed to being married."

In other Kutcher-Moore news...
* Divvy up the dosh: Moore's new edict is to "punish" Kutcher financially, reports the Daily Mail. News.
* Moore 'fragile and alone' without Kutcher, heads for Hawaii, reports the Sunday Mirror. Moore is said to have spent the last few days throwing Kutcher's possessions out of their Beverly Hills home, before legging it for a "week of soul-searching".
* Nice wheels, but no dice. Kutcher's "last ditch effort to save marriage," booms TMZ - a US$100,000 2012 Lexus LS 600h hybrid-engine car for Moore's birthday on November 11.
* Merciful Madge. What's a heartbroken Demi to do when her marriage flatlines? Turn to fellow Kabbalah devotee Madonna for some moral support. "She is calling Demi almost every day and sends her messages telling her to be proud of her strength," claims Hello! Madge, who is no stranger to toyboy dalliances, "has told Demi that Ashton's immaturity is evident and that she deserves someone who will fulfill her intellectually and emotionally". Well, that's his card marked.
* But wait, could a reconciliation be on the cards? According to Us Weekly, the estranged couple reunited at the Beverly Hills home of a pal for some "counseling" over the weekend. Hollywood ending? Don't bet on it.
