What: And the winner is ...
As awards shows go, the BAFTAs are a restrained affair lent a certain grandeur by the likes of Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Ian McKellen. The big contender this year is Atonement, way out in front with 14 nominations including ones for best film, best director (Joe Wright), best actor (James McAvoy), best actress (Keira Knightley) and best supporting actress (Saoirse Ronan). The women will be particularly pleased to see that Dame Helen is not up for any awards this year. The 50th Grammys go ahead courtesy of an agreement with striking American writers. They reasoned that musicians face the same sort of fight for royalties and decided not to picket the event. Kanye West tops the nominations with eight and Amy Winehouse has six.
