"We had an amazing life where I was his princess and when you're 19 or 20, that's cool. But then you grow up and want to explore the world and it doesn't work anymore," she told Woman's Day.
She described the relationship as a "Cinderella story" with the opulent lifestyle at the side of Dotcom, 40, vastly different from a tough childhood tainted by abuse and spent living with different relatives.
"I was only 17 or 18 when we met and I had a difficult childhood, as he did. He gave me emotional security."
She also revealed that Dotcom stashed bags of his favourite food, gummi bears, around the house.
Mrs Dotcom is preparing to study business at Massey University next month.
