Her name has become synonymous with controversy so Saturday Night Live viewers awaited Miley Cyrus' hosting stint with baited breath.
After a raunchy performance at the MTV VMAs, a number of sexually provocative photo shoots and a bizarre music video where she got naked and licked a sledgehammer, the possibilities for Miley to shock on SNL were endless.
And Cyrus showed anything was possible by claiming her former Disney alter-ego Hannah Montana had been murdered in her opening monologue.
She said: "We're not doing anything on Hannah Montana tonight but I can give you an update on what happened to her; she was murdered."
Miley also ruled out any more twerking, claiming it was now 'lame'.
"There will be no twerking tonight: she said. "I used to think it was cool but now that all the white people are doing it, it seems kind of lame.
Miley then hit back at her detractors by launching straight into a skit which poked fun at the controversy over her raunchy VMAs appearance, blaming it on the destruction of America.
The sketch opened in a post-apocalyptic America, where two survivors revealed it was Miley's performance which caused the ruination of America.
It is claimed that a former incarnation of Miley tried to warn the 20-year-old singer that her performance could be too controversial and tried to persuade her to put on some more clothes.
The sweet, long haired Miley was completely different to today's incarnation and the duo had a back and forth on whether Miley should go ahead with her performance or not.
When Miley said, "I'm only 20 years old, I need some freedom to grow up and make mistakes. What's so scandalous?" her past persona answered, "Maybe it's your performance."
Miley was also asked why she keeps sticking her tongue out and replied, "I'm having tiny strokes yo!"
The duo received visits from Robin Thicke and Will Smith, who warned Miley that his children aren't used to seeing anything sexual despite their maturity, and he asked her to keep it G-rated.
The innocent past Miley also presented the blonde with an American Girl doll called Molly as she explains, "It's the American girl doll you keep singing about in all your songs," a joking reference to Miley's repeated reference to drugs in her songs.
The sketch ended with the joke, "That was how America ended, Canada did well though, it turns out Prime Minister Bieber was a fair and generous ruler."
Miley dresses up as Hilary Clinton, announcing her plan to run in 2016 by stripping off her jacket to reveal a bandage bra with the words 2016.
Miley later performed Wrecking Ball wearing a see through jersey under which her black underwear was clearly visible.
Her blonde hair was growing out and was styled similar to Justin Bieber's infamous bowl haircut.
