MILA Kunis has opened up about the breakdown of her nine-year relationship to former child star Macauley Culkin in a revealing new interview.
The Bad Moms actress, who has been married to Ashton Kutcher since 2015, dated Home Alone star Culkin from 2002 to 2011. She spoke about what went on between the former couple in the latest episode of actor Dax Shepard's podcast, Armchair Expert.
She described the end of the pair's relationship as a "horrible, horrible breakup."
"I f**ked up. I was an a**hole in my 20s and I'll be the first to admit it. And that's something that took me a long time to come out and be like, 'Yeah, you know what, I was a d**k,' and accept it and I own it," she confessed.
"And it's f***ed up what I did," she continued. "It's f***ed up what I did, and it's f***ed up how I did it. When I got to be single I said, I just need to figure myself out. I genuinely need to know why I did what I did and, like, regroup myself as a human being."
Kunis didn't go into detail on exactly what "f***ed up" things she did in her relationship with Culkin, but said that she's since forgiven herself for her mistakes.
"You know, it's been so long, like I feel like enough time has gone by. I think enough mutual friends have been like … everybody kind of forgave everybody for what went down.
"At 35, I could look back and be like, 'I was 20.'"
Elsewhere in the same interview, Kunis spoke about the beginnings of her relationship with husband Kutcher, who she started dating two years after the split from Culkin. The couple now have two children together — three-year-old daughter Wyatt and one-year-old son Dimitri.
"We were crazy neurotic about keeping it a secret, probably to a massive fault where we alienated so many friends, I'm sure," she said of their early days trying to keep their relationship under wraps.
And while the pair co-starred on long-running sitcom That 70s Show together, it wasn't until they bumped into each other years later that sparks flew.
Kunis says Kutcher probably thought "that's not the same little girl I used to know" when they reconnected outside of work.
"I told my mum I was seeing him. We were driving up Laurel Canyon, and I was like, 'Mum, I have to tell you I'm dating somebody. And she was like, 'Oh tell me! Who are you dating?' And I was like, 'You've got to brace yourself for this one … I'm dating Ashton Kutcher. And she literally was like, 'Shut the f**k up' in Russian," she recalled.
Kunis said her mother's reticence was due to the fact Kutcher had previously gone through a high-profile split from actress Demi Moore.
"He was coming off of a divorce. He was post, post, post, way post-divorce, but I think there was a lot of misconceptions about the divorce," she said.
"People had a weird perception of who he was based on rumours that he didn't correct," she continued.
"We went into this relationship super transparent with one another, so we knew 100 per cent each other's faults, we knew exactly who we were. … And we were like, 'I accept you for who you are.'"
